Friends & Family Derby Night

Tonight Suburbia Roller Derby hosted its first Friends & Family Night to show all of our families where we go 3 times a week. Eva and Zoe were very excited to attend - mostly for the bake sale as you see above.

Afterward, Eva announced again that she wants to be a derby girl when she gets bigger. She also said that her derby name will be "Fire Wheel" because she's going to skate really fast. Zoe agreed and said that her derby name will be "Superhero".

Finally.... Here are the photos of Eva and Zoe's first days of school. Eva's photos are of her at the bus stop before the bus came. When the bus came, she ran away from us and climbed on the bus without a goodbye, so this is all you get.

For reference, she had created her own Simpson's character the night before and then proceeded to have me fix her hair and give her a tattoo just like her character. She also selected this blue dress that she's had for a year but has never cared about.

And then Zoe had her first day today. She had class for one hour with the parents attending so I was able to take photos of her in the classroom and out on the playground. She had a ball.

She also personally selected to wear her "Aunt Annie" dress.

After Eva's been put to bed, I run back upstairs to grab something from the bathroom. Halfway up, I see her dashing from the bathroom back into her room, looking guilty. I walk into her room, and...

"Well, okay, but you can practice your sweetest smile during the daytime. Nighttime is for sleeping."

I was getting dressed to go out to dinner last night when Eva came into my room.

"Sure," I say, even though I knew what I was wearing.

"I'll find you some shoes," she suggests.

"OK, but make sure they are warm because it's cold outside," I warn her. (She's obsessed with these black wedges I bought for the wedding in France and there was no way I was wearing those. A) I can't walk in them and B) it's freezing!)

She returns with these boots I had bought in Italy years back.

"Good choice, Eva," I say to her, taking the boots.

"I want to dress people when I grow up," Eva decides.

"Alright, yeah, you can be a stylist!"

Mama, I Want To Be A Star

Today I was interviewed on camera for this PR thing for Cousin Laura. I hate being on camera in any form, but that's another story. What is more interesting is Eva's reaction to the whole thing.

This picture is of Lily, a character in a series of books that we find hilarious because, honestly, Eva IS Lily. The book we have now is one I bought for her for Christmas about how Lily's teacher gets married and Lily is absolutely determined to be the flower girl (i.e. "the star"). We read this and then laughed to ourselves about how Eva is exactly the same sort of precocious kid.

And today she proved it.

I had told her that Cousin Scott ("Who?" "New Cousin Caroline's brother." "Oh!") was coming to film mommy for a video and she got really sad, saying she wanted to be on TV. Anyway, we got over it.

When they were outside, doing some filming today before they came in to interview me, Eva asked when they were coming. I told her they would come in when they were ready and really I didn't mind because I was nervous about the whole thing.

"Why are you nervous?" she asked.

"Because I don't want to be on TV."

"Why don't you want to be on TV?"

"I don't want to look stupid," I explained.

"Well if you don't want to look stupid you can go upstairs and put your wedding dress on," she suggested, helpfully.

(Oh my God what turned her into such a princess?! Yes! A princess dress! That solves everything!)

I sort of ignored what she suggested but thanked her anyway (no arguing with her, I've learned.)

About five minutes later she looks at the film crew outside and says: "You should go get it now so you don't look stupid."

(Gah! The bloody wedding dress again!)

"Uh that's OK," I answer.

"Why? You don't care if you look stupid?" she asked.

Thanks.

So this continues...

She goes up into her room for a while as the crew sets up at the bottom of the stairs. (Thank God. I didn't want my cat hair covered curtains or my stained blue chair in the shot.) I am getting set up to interview and she shows up with her white flowered dress that she wore at the wedding in France. Not only that but she's covered her lips with pink lipstick from her makeup box she got for her birthday. And she's wearing her red slippers.

Here is what she looked like:

I get her dressed then she goes in the dining room. A few minutes into the interview, the musical keyboard comes on as she's decided this would be the perfect time to dance to music and perform for the video crew. We ask her to please turn off the music and be quiet. She does it. I keep interviewing.

A few minutes later we hear singing.

We ask her again to be quiet. She says she's going upstairs to get something. I let her pass and ask her to please be quiet so mommy can finish interviewing or I'd have to have her play in the basement for a bit.

She goes into her room and I start answering another question.

Then the wail reverberates through the house.

"WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!"

Yup, she's Lily.

(I did manage to finish the interview and honestly. I'm sure Eva would have been far more exciting than I will be.)

At her five year well visit (which was hell, by the way - loads of shots!), Eva weighed 42 pounds (75th percentile) and 3 feet 10 1/4 inches (off the chart).

We were discussing how Aunt Anne is having a baby and how Eva should help come up with a name for the kid.

"I know a good name!" says Eva.

"What's that?"

"Brixton!"

I immediately stop washing dishes and look over at her. "Did you just say Brixton? Where did you hear about Brixton?"

"From the Rudolph story," explains Eva. "You know Dasher and Dancer and Prancer and Brixton!"

(That would be the coolest Santa sleigh ever...)

I, of course, realized she meant "Vixen" but just the fact that the word "Brixton" came out of the kid's mouth made me very proud.

I am not 100% sure of how this happened but here's basically what Eva said happened at school today.

It was rainy, so instead of going outside to play, the kids had extra circle time.

According to Eva, when there was a break in activity ("Miss Rosie didn't say anything"), Eva "felt like singing" so she started singing Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer. "Then all the other kids started singing too."

Eva also admitted to leading them in a round of Jingle Bells.

We asked her what her teacher did when this happened.

"She started singing too!"

Zoe has a new move where she jumps up, lifts her legs and lands straight on her bum. She did this for daddy tonight for the first time. Eva witnessed this and explained that she did it by landing on her legs first, before landing on her bum.

MC Eva

Since Eva's school is a coop, one of us has to go act as "Parent of the Day" and help out in the classroom. My day was yesterday, so I had to provide and set up the snack and was able to watch how Eva works the room.

During snack time, the kids sit at three different tables: the big rectangle, the little rectangle, and The Bean (which, is shaped like a bean). Eva, being "Child of the Day" was able to pick the spot she wanted, and selected the end of the little rectangle.

As they ate, Eva sat in her chair and enjoyed a view of the entire room. At first I heard her ask a question of her little rectangle mates.

"Hey guys, who likes Santa Claus?!"

All the kids at her table raised their hands.

Then Eva looked over at the other tables.

"Hey, Big Rectangle Table! Who likes Santa Claus?!"

All the kids at the big rectangle table raised their hands.

She went on.

"Hey, Bean Table! Who likes Santa Claus?"

I looked over at her teacher, Miss Rosie.

"She's always like this," Miss Rosie said to me, rolling her eyes.
